| Facilities Individual laboratories are equipped with modern instrumentation for biophysical investigations. The resources include X-ray diffractiometers for the determination of three-dimensional structure of biomolecules, microcalorimetry equipment for thermodynamic analyses of proteins and their affinity for other molecules, state-of-the-art fluorescence and circular dichroism spectrophotometers for characterizing protein and nucleic acid folding, and advanced computing power for database analysis and various structural and dyynamic calculations. In addition, multiple facilities are available to PMB participants through the Johns Hopkins University and Medical Institutions. | Mass Spectrometry Accurate mass measurements for small and large molecules can be obtained at the Mass Spectrometry Facility of the Chemistry Department and the Proteomics Facility of the Institute for Basic Biomedical Sciences. | | Homewood Center for Macromolecular Crystallography A structural analysis center located in the Thomas C. Jenkins Department of Biophysics on the Homewood campus. | | Biological NMR State-of-the-art solution state NMR equipment is available at the Biomolecular NMR Center on the Homewood campus and at the School of Medicine NMR Facility. The instruments include 500, 600, and 800 MHz-NMR spectrometers. In-depth training is provided by Dr. Ananya Majumdar, Director of the Center. | | X-ray Crystallography Located in the Department of Biophysics & Biophysical Chemistry at the Medical School, this facility is fully equipped with several X-ray generators, detectors, and computers. It is maintained as a departmental facility and staffed by a full-time manager. | | Synthesis and Sequencing Protein and nucleic acids can be made or analyzed with excellent turn-around time at the Synthesis and Sequencing Facility of the Medical School. | | Small Molecule Crystallography This Chemistry Department facility is used for structure determination of low-molecular weight natural and synthetic products. |
Also available to the Hopkins community: | Malarai Research Institute Biophysics Core Facility Instrumentation for characterization of macromolecules or macromolecular complexes using biophysical techniques (isothermal titration calorimetry, dynamic light scattering, circular dichroism and X-ray crystallography). | | Integrated Imaging Center Instrumentation necessary for basic and advanced light and electron microscopy (LM/EM), including 3-D and 4-D imaging, FRET, FRAP, and FCS among others. | | ChemCore Compound repository and high throughput robotics laboratory services for enzymatic and biologic assays. | | High Throughput Biology Center For the study of interactions of chemical compounds, gene products, cells and organisms and the networks formed by these interactions. | | Flow Cytometry Core Analytic Laboratories For the characterization and separation of particles as diverse as beads, cells and chromosomes. | | Microscope Facility For light and electron microscopy and electronic imaging. |
